Please comment – how is your city doing? Should Councillor Clive Doucet receive accolades for saying out loud what no one wants to acknowledge?
City of Ottawa all talk, no walk on environment: Doucet
By Patrick Dare, The Ottawa Citizen August 25, 2009Comments (6)
OTTAWA — The City of Ottawa talks big about being a green city and saving the environment but little progress has been made in the last decade, says Councillor Clive Doucet.
Doucet was reacting Tuesday to a report at city council’s planning and environment committee titled “Refresh the City’s Environmental Strategy.” That document uses inspiring phrases to describe the city’s environmental vision. Goals are “a green city,” “development in harmony with the environment,” “a focus on walking, cycling and transit” and “clean air, water and earth.”
But Doucet says the strategy was created in 2003 and “nothing significant” has been done for the environment since then.
“We’re refreshing what?” said Doucet, adding he couldn’t take the report seriously.
He said the city vowed 10 years ago to be a transit-first community but has built big new roads and allowed rampant big-box development instead. He said the city hasn’t kept up with other cities in terms of green-roof development or improved safety for cyclists.
Alta Vista Councillor Peter Hume, chairman of the committee, urged Doucet to become involved to push the environmental file along by getting on the committee that is leading the review. Hume said Doucet should convince his fellow councillors to pay for things like grade-separated bike lanes which would greatly improve the safety of cyclists. Doucet somewhat reluctantly agreed.
A little later in the meeting, councillors voted 5-3 to play host to a “sustainable cities” conference in the fall of 2010. The conference, which will draw about 150 delegates, aims to spread knowledge about how cities around the world are dealing with environmental issues.
The conference could cost the city $70,000, though the amount is expected to be $25,000 or $30,000 if the National Capital Commission and the City of Gatineau make a contribution.

I See Stagnation

Doucet is right. Ottawa is The City That Time Forgot. Nothing happens here. We spin our wheels and go nowhere. It’s a disgrace. It’s so stagnant that a crooked proposal like "Lansdowne Live" gets some people excited–when it should fill them with deep concern. Keep on telling it Clive.

Clive Doucet is part of the "do nothing and can not make up my mind" problem in this city. The stadium, light rail, bridge to QC… He’s been involved in city politics since 1997. What’s he complaining about! He should stand up and get something done, that’s what we elected him for!!!! Stop complaining and whining Mr. Doucet do something, do your job!

I don’t agree with most of what Clive says..but he is right on the money this time..with millions of litres of raw sewage dumped in the Ottawa River weekly..Jim Watson made a fair comment about this problem..and Peter Hume got his knickers in a knot and instead of agreeing with Watson(Jim loves this city..we all know that) Hume decides to get into a "I am the boss here" argument….Hume is more afraid of having his little position of power undermined…and try riding a bike in this city..you are taking your life in your hands..I have never seen a place where hostility is encouraged against bikers..city hall does nothing..they remain silent…what the city does best is bicker all day long in city hall..and collect taxes, give out parking tickets..I have seen the quality of life slide here the last 10 years…enough of the nonsense and get to work in cityhall and cooperate with other levels of govt. Listen to Jim Watson…he knows what he speaks of…

"development in harmony with the environment,” LOL
And how many million litres of raw sewage did we put in our river this month?
I guess that why we have beaches that are never open.–Newsflash– its not really a beach then is it?

Your right Clive this city is always a lot of talk and now walk when it comes to city politics. Just look at the past 20 years with Lansdowne Park.
That is why what Lansdowne Live is proposing is so positive – some actual results and a plan for results with money behind it.
Lansdowne Live all the way on September 2nd!!!!
