Media Release from the Philippines| STOP GLOBAL POWER COAL PLANT OPERATION

Last week’s Global Power Coal Plant test run at Ingore, Lapaz, Iloilo City was a disaster. Numerous residents of surrounding communities complained against the foul odor emitted by the plant. Thirty five (35) pupils of the Ticud Elementary School were told to go home because of the obnoxious fumes. Three of the students lost consciousness. Residents of Ingore also complained of ground tremors, noise and foul fumes. They used cloth soaked in water to defend themselves against the insufferable smoke. The surrounding communities were covered by a smog-like insufferable fumes from the plant. The creeping fumes reached other districts of Iloilo City.

Maura Abellon, chairperson of KADAMAY-Panay, declared that the operation of the Global Power Coal Plant should be stopped and the victims of its test run indemnified.

Before the test run of the Global Power Coal Plant, KADAMAY together with the Ilonggo Action Network on Climate Change (IANCC), church people and other concerned sectors opposed the plant’s construction to protect the people’s health and the environment of the city. They asserted that the owners and proponents of the coal plant lied in making the people believe that plant will use the “safe” and tested “clean coal technology.” The truly clean coal technology which requires reinjecting the toxic refuse and effluents of the plant is too expensive that even the industrialized countries dropped the project.

The result of the plant’s test run refutes the lies of its owners and powerful proponents.

“The people’s welfare is more important than the desire for profits of capitalists. Mayor Mabilog should not issue the plant a permit to operate, investigate the disastrous test run and require the owners to indemnify the victims of its test run.”, concluded the KADAMAY leader. #
